The San Diego Building Owners and Managers Association — or BOMA for short — is an association dedicated exclusively to professionals in the commercial real estate industry.  BOMA International first began in 1907 — making it the oldest and largest of its kind.  In a little over a century, it has flourished with a member count of over 17,000 professionals spread out among 88 U.S. associations and 18 international affiliates.  In its entirety, it involves commercial property owners and managers who represent over 10 billion square feet of commercial property in the United States.

BOMA San Diego, which was founded in 1963, is one of the most active of all BOMA associations — consisting of over 300 members and holding an impressive number of member events throughout the year, such as luncheons, mixers, a golf tournament, gala, and industry expo.  Most members are professionals who are involved directly with the commercial real estate industry, such as property managers, owners,  and facility managers.  But also included in the member mix are those who help with the commercial real estate industry indirectly, which includes professionals in roofing, energy, security, construction, landscaping, and of course…tree service!

LC Tree Service recently started its involvement with BOMA in 2018.  You may ask, “What is a tree service company doing in a commercial real estate association?”  It’s simple — networking!  Our company has been helping to keep commercial properties beautiful throughout San Diego County for more than a decade.  While the company’s history began solely in residential tree work, it has expanded to encompass a project schedule consisting of more than 70% commercial work.  We genuinely appreciate all of our clients, and welcome the opportunity to increase our commercial clientele network.

BOMA is a great association for commercial real estate professionals to gain more industry knowledge through seminars and publications and to increase peer interaction through networking opportunities — but it’s also a great avenue for other companies that help sustain the industry to meet decision-makers and influencers in commercial real estate.  The various meetings and events allow members to mingle and foster business relationships that benefit both parties.  Sponsorship opportunities are also available to help increase brand awareness for companies who are interested.

Perhaps the three most exciting BOMA events are the Annual Golf Tournament, Expo, and Gala.  The Golf Tournament is a fun day when members can enjoy a putting contest, a delicious meal, and a time to connect with other members.  The Expo is a large event organized not only by BOMA San Diego, but also with the help of other similar associations.  Industry resources and leading experts come together to showcase a wide variety of products and services; and to talk about current trends and the best practices in the commercial real estate industry.   This is always highly sought-after occasion for vendors to promote their companies and a great time for members to soak up a plethora of information and ideas.

While golfing and expos are a fun time for some, perhaps the most anticipated event is the BOMA Annual Membership & TOBY Awards Gala that is held towards the end of each year.  This is a special night when men suit up in their fine apparel and women get dolled up in their fancy dresses, and they celebrate the night with a wonderful meal, drinks, laughs, and an awards ceremony to recognize the year’s standout members.

Being members of BOMA has not only provided networking opportunities for LC Tree Service, but also opportunities to serve the San Diego community.  Aside from the numerous events held throughout the year that cater towards BOMA members, a number of events are also organized for charitable purposes.  Earlier in the year, CEO, Larry Coalson, along with dozen of other BOMA members came together to help the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego, William J. Oakes Branch.  The location was given a fresh interior and exterior paint job, the irrigation system was fixed, and landscaping was spruced up.  This was just one of several events held throughout the year that was devoted to caring for the San Diego community.  Other events include supplying foster children with back-to-school supplies and a holiday toy drive.
